These excellent Sombati sized doumbek drums are from Cairo, Egypt. These sombati dumbeks are hand made by Studio Elarabi, considered one of the very best percussion instrument makers in Egypt. Studio Elarabi was founded in 1990 by the late Legend of Rhythm, Mohamed Al Arabi. His sons continue his tradition. The instruments they produce are considered the best found in all of Egypt. The quality and sound of his tablas, sombatis, doholas, riqs, muzhars and more are also highly regarded.

These drums are great examples of the Studio Elarabi tradition of excellence. Like all of his drums, Studio Elarabi starts with only the best quality cast aluminum alloy shells. These are personally hand-picked to ensure they are the thickest and most even-walled, with a minimum of blemishes or irregularities. This is the most crucial step in insuring that the final drum will sound and play the best. It is a step that is not taken by many of the other factories that mass produce their drums. Studio Elarabi simply won't accept shells that do not meet their stringent requirements. Then many hours (each drum takes more than a month to complete), goes into the design and painstaking application of top quality Mother of Pearl inlay and tile designs. And unlike the mass produced MOP darbukas, very little filler or no filler is necessary to make up the lack of quality MOP as is the case with inferior Egyptian doumbeks. These Elarabi sombati's are finished with a perfectly smooth glossy coat. The inside is finished smoothly as well, with either black or brown gloss. The curve of the counter hoop is very smooth and even, making these drums a joy to play, and extremely comfortable. These fine drums are equipped with a replaceable clear synthetic head, tuned to the perfect pitch and ready to play (spare clear head is also included when available).

The sound and playability of this drum is of the highest professional level. The doums are solid and perfectly sustaining, the teks are clear and dry, perfectly toned with the right amount of overtones. You will be hard pressed to find another Egyptian sombati that equals this drum in quality of workmanship and sound. Elarabi's drums are used by members of the Egyptian Music Conservatory and other top professionals around the world. They are extremely exclusive, and are only available in very limited quantities.

  1. Excellent Drums Review by Thomas

I have had my El Arabi drum for several months now and the sound still surprises me. These are truly fantastically well-made drums with perfect pitch and the best sounding overtones I have heard from any drum. The aluminum is an A+ grade cast and the inlay work is so meticulous, it couldn't have been done better with a machine.

This is a very rare opportunity to have a drum of this quality offered for purchase from a legitimate source and delivered to your doorstep. For those of us looking for the highest quality sombatis, this is a real opportunity. Thank you, Ted! (Posted on 6/25/12)

  2. Best drums on the planet !!!!!!! Review by Joe Cochran (Lumani, Alabama USA)

This is the second Elarabi Sombati drum our group has purchased. They are absolutely a joy to play right out of the box. They sound just as beautiful as they look. The service and carrying case are also first class. The only problem with these drums is keeping them away from the other drummers. Now I have no excuse not to practice more to deserve to play on such a fine instrument. Thanks Ted, Joe (Posted on 6/25/12)
