Doumbek, Ceramic, Mosaic ~ Achieve that authentic sound with this original style clay darbuka with fixed fishskin head.
This authentic hand-crafted Egyptian doumbek is approximately 10.25 to 11 inches wide by 17 to 17.5 inches tall, and has a 8.5 inch playing surface. It includes a basic quilted nylon case. For better protection, order the recommended heavily padded case (NCCL), listed in the Related Products to the right. The fish skin head is fixed to the pottery wheel-thrown ceramic drum shell and sewn to a cotton collar, which is then tied to the drum shell. Beautiful and intricate mosaic inlay makes this ceramic doumbek not only a great sounding drum, but also a work of art.
The approximate weight of this ceramic doumbek is 9.6 pounds. Patterns may vary slightly from drum to drum. All mosaic inlays are fairly delicate. It is not uncommon for small pieces of mosaic to dislodge. This is especially true around the edges and on the collar of the doumbek. With a drum’s curving surface, this is to be expected. Missing inlay is not considered a defect or blemish. Your drum is unique and small irregularities should just be considered "birth marks".
All drums with natural/ non-synthetic heads are affected by the relative humity conditions of the surrounding air. So if you live in a rainy location with high humidity, your drum may tend to sound dull and the drum head will seem loose. To achieve the best tone from this type of ceramic doumbek with a natural head in these types of conditions, it is best to gently heat the head with a low wattage light bulb placed within the drum bottom several inches from the inside surface of the fish skin head. But do this gently, and be careful not to scorch the doumbek head. Please refer to the YouTube video explaining this gentle heating/tightening technique by clicking on the tab to the right.
