| Veena -paraphrased from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The design of the veena has evolved over the years, probably from the veena form seen in South Indian Medieval paintings and temple sculpture: a string instrument with two gourd resonators connected by a central shaft, possibly of bamboo, and held diagonally from lap to shoulder. Veena in South India developing from Kinnari Veena in the 1600s was initially known as Tanjori Veena after hereditary makers from Thanjavur but was later called Saraswati veena. The veena was made in several regions in South India, and those veena made by makers from Thanjavur in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu are to date considered the most sophisticated veena. Sangeet Ratnakar calls it Ektantri Veena and gives the method for the veena construction. The North Indian rudra veena and vichitra veena, technically zithers, demonstrate this genealogy of the veena. Descendents of Tansen reserved Rudra Veena for family and out of reverence began calling it Saraswati Veena. Order your vichitra veena today! |
Bağlama (saz) -paraphrased from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The bağlama saz(Turkish: bağlama, from bağlamak, "to tie") is a stringed musical instrument shared by various cultures in the Eastern Mediterranean, Near East, and Central Asia. The Baglama saz is sometimes referred to as the saz. According to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, "the terms 'bağlama' and 'saz' are used somewhat interchangeably in Turkey."[1] The term saz is mainly used to refer to a family of plucked string instruments, long-necked lutes used in Ottoman classical music, Turkish folk music, Kurdish music, and various other countries in the region. The baglama is the most common of these saz, and is often called by the generic name "saz". The saz can be played with a saz plectrum or with a saz fingerpicking style known as şelpe. Appalachian dulcimer -paraphrased from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Appalachian dulcimer (or mountain dulcimer) is a fretted string instrument of the zither family, typically with three or four dulcimer strings. It is native to the Appalachian region of the United States. The dulcimer body extends the length of the dulcimer fingerboard, and the dulcimer fretting is generally diatonic. Origins of the dulcimer Although the Appalachian dulcimer appeared in regions dominated by Irish and Scottish settlement, the dulcimer has no known precedent in Ireland or Scotland. However, several diatonic fretted zithers exist in Continental Europe, which bear a strong similarity to the dulcimer. Jean Ritchie (The Dulcimer Book, 1974) and others have speculated that the Appalachian dulcimer is related to similar European instruments like the langeleik, scheitholt, and epinette des Vosges.
